New Nile Bridge at Jinja Project

Client: Zenitaka-Hyundai Joint Venture
Project: Construction of a New Bridge across the R. Nile at Jinja, UGANDA
Description: Environmental Monitoring, Staffing, Compliance Auditing, Health and Safety, Gender and HIV/AIDS services for Construction of the New Bridge across the River Nile at Jinja. JBN provided the Environment Specialist, Site Environment Officer, Safety Engineer and the Site Nurse to support the Contractor. Quarterly services include the bathymetry surveys, water quality monitoring, gender and HIV/ AIDS and technical backstopping services.
Period: Since 2014 until October 2018


Infrastructure

Client: Uganda National Roads Authority(UNRA)
Project: Environment and Social Impact Assessment and Resettlement Action Plan for the upgrading of Koboko-Yumbe-Moyo road(105 km)
Description: For decades, Uganda has been hosting refuges and asylum seekers from many conflict-affected countries in its neighbourhood. It is with this background that the Government of Uganda, through the Uganda National Roads Authority has earmarked the upgrading of 105-km Koboko – Yumbe – Moyo Road segment from unpaved to paved (Bituminous standard). The objective of the assignment is to carry out the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and the Resettlement Action plan (RAP) as required under the Uganda's Environmental Impact Assessment laws and regulations, and the World Bank Environmental and Social Framework (ESF).
Period: Since October 2019 until March 2020


Water Supply Systems

Client: National Water and Sewerage Cooperation (NWSC)
Project: Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for Kagera Water Supply
Description: Tanzania and Uganda agreed on the need for the development of a bulk water supply from Kagera River on the Ugandan side for both production and domestic use in Isingiro to replace the current practice of taking livestock to drink from the Kagera River. JBN was contracted to carry out an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) is to ensure that any adverse environmental or socio-economic impacts arising from proposed project development activities
Period: Since October 2019 until February 2020


Infrastructure

Client: Katahira & Engineers International (KEI).
Project: Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), Land Acquisition Plan/Resettlement Action Plan, Gender Action Plan and Social Profiling for Improvement of National Road in Refugee-Hosting Areas of West Nile Sub- Region
Description: The Ugandan government currently accepts more than 1.4 million refugees from South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Somalia, etc. (UNHCR, 2018). By improving roads in Yumbe District, the Project aims to secure the goods transportation route in the district, shorten the time of movement and transportation, and promote the movement and logistics of people in the area.

Infrastructure

Client: Ministry of Local Government
Project: Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for Selected Community Access Roads
Description: The Ministry of Local Government has secured funding amounting to USD 70.98 million from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Adaptive Smallholder Agricultural Programme (ASAP) and Government of Uganda (GoU) financing to implement the Project for the Restoration of Livelihoods in the Northern Region (PRELNOR).

EHSS Audit of Karuma 600 MW HPP

Client: Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development
Project: Environmental Health Safety and Social Audit of Karuma 600 MW HPP
Description: The purpose is to assess the compliance with National Environmental legislation. Undertaking Environmental Audits was in compliance with sub regulation (2) of regulation 31 of the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations.
Period: Since April 2018 until July 2018


EHSS Audit of Isimba 183 MW HPP

Client: Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development
Project: Environmental Health Safety and Social Audit of Isimba 183 MW HPP
Description: The purpose is to assess the compliance with National Environmental legislation. Undertaking Environmental Audits was in compliance with sub regulation (2) of regulation 31 of the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations.
Period: Since April 2018 until July 2018


Catchment Protection for Water Supply

Client: Water and Sanitation Development Facility – Central
Project:Water Supply and Sanitation Programme Phase II
Description: The objective is to develop site-specific ESMPs , monitor ESMP implementing including bi-annual monitoring, prepare sitespecific Catchment Situation Reports and Catchment Protection Plans including training Youth and Women Groups on tree planting and modern catchment proSince Oct 2017until Sept 2020tection activities.

Agriculture

Client: Ministry of Water and Environment
Project: Feasibility Studies for Mega Irrigation Schemes under Lot 1, 2,3 and 4 ( Mt. Elgon area, Mt. Rwenzori area and Agoro Hills )
Description: Government of Uganda is committed to addressing the above challenges by prioritising irrigation development through provision of formal irrigated agriculture systems in the Country as well as increasing their functionality. To consolidate these achievements, the Government of Uganda shall undertake feasibility studies for development of new Mega Irrigation Schemes. The feasibility studies for which these terms of reference are formulated will cover dam/reservoir development for multi-purpose uses, irrigation development, watershed management as well as water supply for auxiliary use (municipal and livestock water supply).

Health

Client: Abt Associates
Project: Environmental Compliance Audit of the President’s Malaria Intiative (PMI) VectorLink Project, Uganda.
Description: Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) is undertaken in 15 districts i.e. Amolator, Alebtong, Butaleja, Butebo, Dokolo, Palisa, Namutumba, Budaka, Serere, Bujiri, Kibuku, Otuke, Lira, Kaberamaido, and Tororo sprayed with Actellic 300CS insecticide with support from USAID/ PMI and DFID. Abt Associates Inc. commissioned an environmental compliance audit of the PMI VectorLink Uganda Project to assess the project’s adherence to environmental guidelines, requirements and regulations of Uganda, the IRS best management practices and USAID environmental compliance requirements.
Period: February 2019 until Aug 2019


Municipal Infrastructure

Client: Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development
Project: Environmental Audit of on-going USMID Municipal Investment Projects
Description: The USMID program aims at enhancing the institutional capacity of the 14 municipalities (Arua, Gulu, Lira, Soroti, Moroto, Mbale, Jinja, Entebbe, Masaka, Mbarara, Kabale, Fort Portal, Hoima and Tororo) to improve urban service delivery. The USMID investments mainly comprise civil works for different infrastructural projects in 13 municipalities

Energy

Client: Rural Electrification Agency
Project: Environmental Audit of 33KV Grid-Extension & Associated Low Voltage Reticulation Lines
Description: The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has been implementing 5 lots of Rural Electrification Projects under funding from the French Development Agency (AFD). Prior to construction, the projects were subjected to Environmental Impact Assessment (ElA) and ElA certificates of approval were issued by NEMA. One of the conditions of the EIA certificates issued by NEMA is for REA to carry out a comprehensive Environmental Audit within 36 months from the date of certificate issuance.

Aviation Fuel Farms & Hydrants

Client: Tristar Energy Limited, Uganda
Project: Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for the Proposed New Aviation Fuel Farm & Hydrant lines at Entebbe International Airport, Uganda
Description: ITristar Energy Limited, Uganda proposed to build a 12 million litre capacity state of the art Aviation storage Terminal and new hydrant lines in line with the Civil Aviation Authority Master Plan at Entebbe International Airport.
Period: Since March 2017 until May 2017


Transboundary Irrigation Projects

Client: Nile Equatorial Lakes Subsidiary Action Program (NELSAP)
Project: Nyimur Multipurpose Water Resources Project
Description: Governments of Uganda and South Sudan through NELSAP contracted JBN Consults & Planners together with SMEC to undertake the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment. The core scheme of the project consists of a 26-m head dam and reservoir on Nyimur River and five (5) modules of irrigated lowland rice of approximately 5,105 ha.
Period: Since April 2016 until April 2017


Hydropower Development

Client: Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD)
Project: Nyamba B Hydropower Project
Description: JBN was subcontracted by AECOM (South Africa) to undertake the ESIA for the proposed Nyamba B Hydropower Plant in Kasese/Kabarole District as part of the Feasibility Study.
Period: Completed July 2016


Civil Aviation

Client: Civil Aviation Authority (CAA)
Project: Expansion of Entebbe International Airport
Description: The CAA had a number of proposals to expand Entebbe International Airport. Our ESIA guided the CAA to optimize the existing space and helped CAA avoid the proposal to extend Runway 12/30 600 m into L. Victoria that would have faced a lot of resistance! That’s the kind of value our informed assessments yield!.

South Sudan

Client: Concord Agriculture (South Sudan)
Project: 250,000 ha Concord Agricultural Project in Unity State of South Sudan
Description: We have crossed borders of a number of countries in Africa and in very fragile areas where most experts have been afraid of! In 2012, we braved the heat in South Sudan and conducted the Environment and Social Impact Assessment and prepared the Pest Management Plan for the project.

Thermal Power Projects

Client: Albatross Energy (U) Limited
Project: Environment Impact Assessment for the 230 MW Thermal Power Project at Itara, Hoima District, UGANDA
Description: In 2012, JBN was contracted by Albatross Energy (U) Ltd to conduct the Environment and Social Impact Assessment for the proposed 230 MW Thermal Power Project at Kibingo in Hoima Municipality. JBN also presented the ESIA at the Public Hearing that enabled Albatross to acquire a generation license from the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA).
